Iga Swiatek Out of Wimbledon with Lost to Yulia Putintseva in Round 3
Top-ranked Iga Swiatek suffered an upset at the hands of Yulin Putintseva in the third round of Wimbledon. Aside from being out of Wimbledon, Swiatek broke her 21-match winning streak on Saturday. Putintseva had an excellent second set where the Kazakh player broke twice.
The anxious audience booed four-time French Open winner Swiatek as she hurried off the court just before the final. It appeared to derail the top seed, and on the third match point, Putintseva, the thirty-first seed, scored to win herself a remarkable 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 triumph.
Putintseva, born in Moscow, lapped in all the praise before her interview on the court.
Iga Swiatek Out of Wimbledon and Other Upsets
Because of weather delays earlier in the day, the match took two hours and eighteen minutes longer than expected. Harriet Dart, who had fought back to upset Katie Boulter of the United Kingdom in the previous round, lost 6-2, 5-7, 3-6. Despite holding a 3-0 lead, the British No. 2 lost six consecutive games in the third set decider, preventing her from advancing to the fourth round.
Number One in the World Two hours after the match was supposed to start at 11 a.m., Dart made it 3-1. After Xinyu Wang took a breather, Dart responded well to regain a two-game lead, 4-2. After 38 minutes of play, Dart won the first set with a forehand winner, and after trading breaks of service in the second set, she appeared to be well-positioned to advance to the round of singles.
Shortly after serving a double fault, she faced a 15-30 disadvantage. However, from deuce, the Brit smashed the ball into the net, and Wang rescued the hold for 5-5 before eventually breaking service. Just earlier in the week, Dart had defeated Boulter in a nail-biting tiebreak, but now, his frustration was showing.
Once she got out to a 3-0 lead, it looked like she had recovered nicely. However, Wang rallied for six consecutive games to turn the match in her favor. Wang debuted with a victory over American Jessica Pegula, her first-ever game against a top-five opponent.
