Gareth Southgate Resigned as England’s Manager after Euro 2024 Loss to Spain

Gareth Southgate has been the England’s National Team manager for eight years. In four tournaments, he led the team to two finals appearances. On Tuesday, he resigned, saying it was time for change.

According to soccer news reports, his final game as national team coach was Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the European Championship final. Following months of speculation over his future, Southgate has finally announced his contract, which was set to end this year.

A heartbreaking way to finish his reign, Mikel Oyarzabal turned around England’s underperforming national team with an 86th-minute goal in Berlin. After being hired in 2016, he guided England to consecutive Euro finals and a 2018 World Cup semifinal appearance.

However, he was unsuccessful in finally bringing home a major trophy for the country after it had waited for decades, beginning with the 1966 World Cup.

At the end of the group stage match against Slovenia, which ended in a scoreless draw, he was the target of plastic beer cups thrown by spectators who were furious with the squad for their early performances.

But by guiding England to not one, but two finals—one of which was held abroad—he accomplished something no previous England manager has done. England has won just seven tournament knockout games since 1966 before Southgate’s appointment. While he was in charge, the squad won nine games.

During Southgate’s tenure as England’s manager, the national team ranked among FIFA’s top five for six years. A previous record of seven months had been set. The focus will now shift to selecting Southgate’s replacement, a process the FA has stated is already underway.

Who Will Replace Southgate?

Jurgen Klopp, Sarina Wiegman, and Eddie Howe were quickly named as possible successors to Southgate. The English Football Association said that it has already started the process of finding a new manager. Instead of hastily deciding on its new boss, the Football Association is ready to face Ireland in the Nations League on September 7 with an interim coach.

The Football Association (FA) has appointed two foreign coaches—the Swede Sven-Göran Eriksson and the Italian Fabio Capello—and no English contenders are working at the sport’s highest level. Klopp is free to take over, having left Liverpool at season’s end, while Mauricio Pochettino is also unemployed, having left Chelsea.

After nine successful years at Anfield—during which Liverpool won every major trophy and finally ended their 30-year title drought—Klopp became a legend. After announcing his resignation in January, he said he was exhausted and has since been linked to the United States men’s national team.

Even if contacted, no one knows if he would be interested in the England post or if the opportunity would come too soon during his vacation from soccer.
