Another Attempt to Legalize Casino and Sports Betting in Georgia
For years, many attempts have been made to legalize sports betting in Georgia without any success. According to gambling news, 11 bills have been made to date to legalize sports gambling in the Peach State. However, according to the sportsbook pay per head industry, none have made it to the governor’s office. For the state of Georgia, the issue of having legal casino gambling and sports betting is becoming more crucial. This is because 3 surrounding states now border Georgia which means that gambling money is leaving the state coffers. These states include Florida, North Carolina and Tennessee with South Carolina and Alabama also working on their own gambling bill.
Therefore, it not a surprise that a new bill to legalize sports betting in Georgia is again making headway in the state.
Attempt Legalize Casino and Sports Betting in Georgia – Senate Resolution 538
While Senate Resolution 538 is not the only proposed sports betting bill in Georga this year, this one is gaining traction. For example, Senate Bill 386 is now heading to the House of Chamber after receiving a 35-15 vote. This bill would issue 16 licenses for $100,000 to apply for and companies would pay a $1 million annual fee. Furthermore, they sportsbooks would also have to pay a 20% tax on the revenue made off sports gambling.
On the other hand, Senate Resolution 538 wants a change to the state’s constitution by enabling casino gambling in Georgia.  The resolution was introduced early in January of this year. According to the 8 Senators who made the bill, it would create five brick-and-mortar casinos across Georgia.
In addition, the bill would include the legalization of sports betting in Georgia. Since Senate Resolution 538 got the approval of the Georgia’s Senate Economic Development and Tourism Committee, it is gaining popularity.
The revenue from it would help different initiative which include 50% of it going towards transportation projects. Furthermore, 20% of the tax would go towards child-care program while the last 30% of would go towards other programs.
Of course, there remains many disagreements as to how the revenue from legal gambling in Georgia, would be spent. According to gambling analysts, this is the main reasons as to why past attempts to legalize sports betting have failed.
